The Importance of Support

Studies have shown that support is vital to the emotional well-being of an individual, providing a foundation of love and encouragement that fosters happiness and reduces stress. Yet, when support is lacking, feelings of isolation and low self-esteem can take root, casting a shadow over even the brightest moments of life. Achieving goals becomes more challenging without the motivation and resources that a supportive network provides. Coping with life’s inevitable challenges becomes a solitary endeavor, devoid of the comfort and practical assistance that supportive relationships offer. And personal growth stalls in the absence of constructive feedback and mentorship, leaving individuals feeling stagnant and unfulfilled.

Let me ask you a question…Have you ever felt inexplicably alone, despite being surrounded by what should be your support system?

I have, more times than I care to admit. It’s a sensation that cuts deep, like a wound that never quite heals. I have those core individuals in my life – family, friends, those I’ve naturally connected with over the years. I know they care, I know they love me, yet when it comes to those pivotal moments, those unique occasions that demand their presence and support, they’re conspicuously absent. Or, perhaps worse, their support comes in a form far removed from what I had hoped for.

This is a scenario that has played out for me time and time again, a familiar tune in the symphony of my life. From parents failing to rally behind varying passions or listen during a difficult time. To friends failing to get behind business ventures. Or family simply neglecting to check in on you “just because”. I get it, we’re all leading our own lives, each with its own demands and distractions. It’s easy to understand, perhaps even forgive, the occasional slip-up in support. However, when these incidents form a pattern, when they become the norm rather than the exception, it leaves you feeling adrift in a sea of solitude.

The Experience and Navigating the Absence of Support

So, what do you do when faced with such profound loneliness and lack of support, when those closest to you fail to recognize, let alone celebrate, your victories and milestones? At a point, I wasn’t even sure I would graduate, completely oblivious as to where I would find the tuition for my final semester. There were no offers of rides to and from school, no check-ins to see how I was coping with the demands of academia. Instead, I had to figure this out by myself, yearning for the reassuring presence of family during moments of uncertainty.
